Explanation

So- It's obvious that I've got some explaining to do.

This summer, I got busier then I ever thought was possible! And so I haven't been updating blogs and youtube pages. So I decided to put my youtube aspirations aside, because I simply do not have the time. Although- If you guys want to, you can subscribe to my family's channel! In addition to my musical theatre performances, it has my brothers guitar performance. It is www.youtube.com/hooverproductionz (just posted 4 new videos of my cabaret that I was in!) And as always, my MsBroadwayBrunette will still be up, it just won't be updated with videos every other day, and I won't be taking request and all that jazz! I will still log on here and update you guys on what's going on when I have time! Plus- my friend and I are thinking of making our own youtube account and doing female duets! So please stay tuned!

Also- Thanks for all the support on my youtube channel and my blog! It meant the world to me!

Recent Happenings

So, I have some news. I found out that I did not make A Christmas Carol. In a way, I'm not upset about it. Mainly because, if I were to make it, I planned on turning it down anyways. I have a lot of things that I want to do around the time of A Christmas Carol, and now I guess I can do them! I want to audition for the fall school play, join the honors choir, and play girls' fall tennis. So in a way, I'm relieved!

For the summer, I'm still in the process of rehearsals for Guys and Dolls Jr. and "Songs that Go Like This" (the cabaret) So all is good!

One thing I like to mention is my youtube account (www.youtube.com/MsBroadwayBrunette) It's fairly new, and therefore does not have a lot of viewers!

When I first started musical theatre, I knew absolutely nothing about it! (which I feel is only natural) With help from musicaltheatreaudition.com (which I sadly miss) I gained knowledge, but there were some questions that I wanted to learn more about. So, I would search, none other than youtube! And when it came to musical theatre tutorials/questions on youtube, there are slim to none. So I always had the idea of answering common questions relating to musical theatre! But- I also wanted to sing. And so I thought, sing first and when your videos gain more viewers, make the videos that give advice!

You guys read in a video I put up the other day, that I'm having technical issues. When I record myself singing I use a Nikon digital camera. It's great with taking pictures- but as for videos where there's singing, not so much. The camera has awful sound quality, and muffles my voice. So I'm in the process of finding equipment. I have been asking youtubers what they use, and such. So within a couple months I should have the proper recording system. But as for now, I'm going to take this singing break to post those videos I mentioned prior! Some of my ideas are:

Musical Reviews
Advice for those of you with questions (musically related)
Tutorials (stage make-up, stage hair)
Common questions for starters (what to wear to an audition, how to overcome nerves, proper etiquette, gaining expierence and expanding repertoire, etc.)
and fun character montage videos (which I just posted one today, so check it out!)

But I need help from you, the viewers! I'd like to hear lots of requests! So check my youtube out, and spread the word to a friend! I also want to give a big thanks you to those of you who have been following my blog and my youtube channel from the beginning, I really appreciate your support and the feedback you have been giving me!

The Things I've Been Wanting to Say

Hey fellow thespians! So, currently I'm extremely bored. So I decided, today I will write a new post on my blog to just say a few important things!

1. Recently, I have posted several videos of me singing on YouTube! And I look forward to keeping those coming! I need subscribers, though, currently I only have two! If you have a YouTube account, make sure to subscribe, it would mean the world to me! Here's the link to my channel: http://www.youtube.com/msbroadwaybrunette I'm also looking for requests. Do you guys have any?

2. As you guys know, I just started rehearsing for Guys and Dolls Jr! It has just started, so I don't have a lot to say about it. I look forward to posting some pics for you guys as the show progresses! I also am doing a cabaret. We're are doing group numbers such as: Seasons of Love, The Telephone Hour, Just One Person, and We Go Together! I hope (if they allow me) to post the performance on my YouTube channel!

Mainly, this is what I'm focusing a lot on these days. Performing. Whether it's on stage or in front of a video camera :)

Last thing! Earlier in this post I metioned "Just One Person". Before the cabaret, I never heard of this song. Now that I have, I can't get enough of it! So I'm going to link the song here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_Rfjl6tGW4 It's a beautiful song from Snoopy the Musical!

Big Turn in Events

Hello! So there is a big change of plan (again):

1. I managed to audition for Guys and Dolls Jr. It was one of the hardest audition processes I have ever been through. The first audition went well, I was one of four girls considered for Sarah Brown. (which by the way, I came in there wanting Adelaide, but oh well, aha) We also did a lot of reading that night, which has always been my strongest quality. Then I received a callback. At the callback it literally became between another girl and me. But what made it the hardest, was that this girl was my best friend! I mean I wanted the role badly, but I also felt like she also deserved the role. I mean- we were literally "neck-in-neck", but not in the terms of the same. We did everything differently. She soprano-sung "If I were a Bell" and I belted "If I were a Bell". During the crying part of a scene she did a low-silent cry and I did a high-pitched loud cry (hey, it made the audience laugh!). And what I lacked in singing, I made up for in acting. And what she lacked in acting, she made up for in singing! IT WAS CRAZY!!!

In the end- she got the part of Sarah. Honestly- I was quite devastated. And it took me a while to face my friend (even though it was completely not her fault). But after a day or two, I got over it, and genuinly became happy for her. For like I said, she deserved it :)

P.S.-I got the role of General Cartwright (which is not a guy, it's a woman) ((I said that because I get a lot of questions about the gender of the character I play, lol))

Audition Results

Wow, it's been a while! So a lot of things changed according to my original plan.

1. I am NOT auditioning for Guys and Dolls Jr. I am absolutely positive that it is the right thing to do. I'm just busying myself by getting involved, and I'm not sure I would like the inconvenient location of the theatre. I really like Guys and Dolls, so I'm hoping I'll have an opportunity to perform in it at another theatre/time.

2. I DID end up auditioning for a cabaret-type show called "Songs that Go Like This" and A Christmas Carol. I got callbacks for both of them! So I went to the callbacks, and I have officially made the cabaret show. They have not announced the results of A Christmas Carol. In fact, they are pushing the additional callbacks to early June. So that's when I will find out.

Saturday, April 3, 2010

Hello again! So I just finalized several upcoming auditions. It includes a theatre's season audition and a Guys and Dolls Jr. audition. The season audition includes A Christmas Carol and Peter Pan. For the Guys and Dolls Jr. audition I'm mainly shooting for Sarah Brown. (But inside I REALLY want to try for Adelaide) I don't know what possesses me to play roles outside my range. I guess the kind of roles that I would like to play are always outside my range. For example, I like to play roles opposite of what I am because its more fun! I mean, Sarah Brown is JUST like me...WHY ON EARTH WOULD I WANT TO PLAY SOMEBODY EXACTLY LIKE ME?!?

Although, what has really been frustrating is the knowledge that my voice is able to be flexed to sing mezzo, sometimes even alto. I've practiced Adelaide's songs, and I can sing them just as well as Sarah's, but I know the minute I sing too much mezzo, my upper voice will go down the tube. (which is reminded to me by my voice teacher almost everyday) So at this point, its more a question of what I want to be the rest of my life, a mezzo or Soprano 1. The only thing is, my voice teacher doesn't teach or approve of mezzos. The minute I started with her (age 12), she made me a soprano 1. Every time I show even the slightest of change towards a mezzo, she tells me "STOP!"

One thing I noticed though, my voice teacher always say I add to much heaviness. She also says that my voice seems as though I've been belting a lot. (btw-I WISH I knew how to belt!) She always asks, "Doesn't that feel pressurized?" And inside, I'm like "NOOOOOO!!!" It doesn't hurt at all, it feels natural...singing mezzo FEELS natural! What feel unnatural is when I have to warm-up like crazy to be able to sing a simple high note. I mean, it doesn't HURT, but it doesn't come as natural to me as to other sopranos. At this point I don't know where to turn or what to become. I know how precious and fragile one's voice is, and I don't want to screw things up. Hopefully, time will tell, but I have the feeling that my voice at this age is able to sing many differnt ranges...so the question is, how do you know which one is supposed to be it?
I'm afraid that, I'll never know which range belongs to me, until it's too late and I lose my voice singing something I never knew was harming it...

What do you DO in a situation like this?

Chorus Costume

Hey y'all! So It's been about a week since I performed in my final performance of Once Upon a Mattress. OUAM (as I will shorten it to) was put on by my high school. It was a GREAT experience, especially for my first year in high school. Hopefully, I will have three more years of performing in our high school's musical! So I thought I would share some pictures from the experience!

In addition to being in the chorus ensemble, I was also "Princess no. 12" Princess no. 12's role included being tested in the first scene of the show. She was being tested by the queen to see if she was fit enough to marry the queen's son, Prince Dauntless. This part was small, but very fun to play. If you are interested in seeing me play this role, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov_wyWdCD64

Princess no. 12 Costume
I might put up more pictures in the future! So for now, Adios, and I'll be talking to you soon!

Hello! My name is Holly and I'm what you can call an "aspiring performer". I'm a girl who is completely addicted to musical theatre. (with passion) I had a previous blog, but I lost interest in it, because there was nothing that interesting happening in my theatre-life. I figured since thing are now starting to get busy and take off, it might be a good time to share it on my blog! Goodbye for now, and you'll hear from me soon!
